School of Creativity and Design: Explore, Inspire, Share!30.6.2016
In the beginning of April I saw an interesting post in Facebook. Vesa-Matti Ruottinen, who I met few years back in the Global Service Jam, was planning to start School of Creativity and Design (SC&D) “summer course” in Tampere. He was inspired by his visit to Stanford University Institute of Design and wanted to bring similar atmosphere of inspiration and openness and hands-on mindset also to Finland. He was looking for enthusiastic people around him in order to plan and implement a SC&D summer pilot. I got excited immediately due to my roots at Proakatemia, the academy of learning by doing, team learning and new knowledge and expertise. A team of 8 eager superheroes formed quickly around Vesku’s idea and the summer pilot officially started on the 8th of June. At this point of summer School of Creativity and Design has around 30 enthusiastic, open and brave learners.
The School of Creativity and Design is about building creative thinking, inspiring people, and finding novel learning. We want the SC&D to be a space where we can discover creative thinking, build inspiration, and enable meaningful, collaborative learning and encouraging hands-on mindset with which learners can realize their potential, find meaningful work, develop themselves and enjoy life. Our mission is to offer an environment where learners can safely and equally learn to think differently, to overcome failures and to develop a set of skills for the changing world.
SC&D is about being open to new things, trying, failing, celebrating failures, believing in yourself, thinking differently and learning in your own way. The essence of learning is collaboration and sharing the knowledge that learners have and pick up on the way.
SC&D summer pilot consists of 14 sessions, in which we learn about topics such as learning, dialogue, drama, design & improvisation, design thinking and service design. It’s all done by collaborative learning. Our mentality is the following: no students, no teachers, only learners. In other words, we learn together about both our topics and ourselves. Everybody can learn from each other. We’ll have many interesting guests to introduce different topics, and we will have a multi-discipline group of learners who can discuss and share their knowledge with each other. In our partners include e.g. Vincit, the best workplace in Finland and Europe (Great Place to Work Institute, 2016).
At the moment, we are running the School of Creativity and Design summer pilot pro bono. All this is organized by people who want want to make things happen, help others and the society and be part of building a new kind of “school” to Finland and later to other countries as well.
The program of this free summer pilot can be found here. In some sessions, there are few spots left so if you are in Tampere and got interested, you’re warmly welcome to join!
Inspiring summer wishes,
